This paper presents a study about the attitudes towards mathematics and its teaching which students who are in the first year of the degree in Primary Education from the University of Cordoba have. For this, it has been used an open test which was carried out by 53 first-year students of this university. The results of this research showed that these students value the usefulness of mathematics, although some of them consider it more relevant than others. Moreover, they focus mainly on its application to everyday life. Despite this, some of them are not interested in teaching this subject in their future career and they do not know what knowledge they need to have to be able to teach it. However, they are fully aware of some of the different obstacles that a mathematics teacher has to face.
