Sesgos en el razonamiento probabilístico y efectos en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje estadístico elemental

    En ocasiones, cuando nos enfrentamos a ciertas situacio- nes cotidianas que necesitan juicios y decisiones basadas en una perspectiva probabilística, no empleamos correctamen- te conceptos y principios matemáticos de la probabilidad y la estadística como, por ejemplo, la ley de los grandes números, el principio de regresión a la media o el concepto de tamaño muestral. En su defecto, solemos utilizar diver- sas estrategias de razonamiento que nada tienen que ver con dichos principios matemáticos. Dichas estrategias (o heurísticos) son, en la mayoría de ocasiones, falsamente adquiridos a través de las experiencias de la vida cotidiana, pero tienen un valor funcional y eminentemente práctico que las hace persistentes y sistemáticas. El problema es que, en determinadas circunstancias, pueden impedir o sesgar la aplicación de los conceptos y principios matemáticos correctos. El presente trabajo de investigación se enmarca dentro de la teoría de Kahneman y Tversky, conocida como el paradigma de heurísticos y sesgos, y pretende poner de manifiesto la existencia de éstos en jóvenes universitarios, heredados durante su formación secundaria.

    Sometimes, when we face certain everyday situations that need judgments and decisions based on a probabilistic per- spective, we do not correctly use mathematical concepts and principles of probability and statistics, such as the law of large numbers, the principle of regression to the mean or the concept of sample size. Otherwise, we usually use differ- ent reasoning strategies that have nothing to do with these mathematical principles. These strategies (or heuristics) are most of the times falsely acquired through the experiences of everyday life, but they have a functional and eminently practical value that makes them persistent and systematic.

    The problem is that, in certain circumstances, they can pre- vent or bias the application of the correct mathematical concepts and principles. This research work is framed within the theory of Kahneman and Tversky, known as the paradigm of heuristics and biases, and aims to highlight the existence of these in young university students, inherited during their secondary education.
