El mercado de divisas o Forex es un mercado mundial donde se negocia el cambio entre distintas divisas (o monedas) y que funciona ininterrumpidamente, excepto en fines de semana.
Por ejemplo, para denotar el cambio entre el euro y el dólar se utiliza comúnmente la abreviatura EURUSD. En el momento de escribir este artículo, el valor de cotización del EURUSD es de 1,07, lo que significa que cada euro se cambia por 1,07 dólares, o que cada dólar se cambia por ⇡ 0,935 euros. En la Figura 1 se puede ver cual ha sido la cotización de EURUSD durante el año 2016. Debido al Teorema Central del Límite, la distribución de probabilidad que rige muchos fenómenos tanto naturales como artificiales es la distribución Normal o distribución de Gauss. De hecho, durante bastante tiempo se usó en finanzas dicha distribución para modelar las fluc- tuaciones, e incluso hoy en día se sigue usando de algún modo.
