• Many essential ideas in mathematics depend on the practice of using multiple straight segments to approximate a curve. Certainly, this notion is an underpinning of calculus. Curve stitching is an art form that illustrates this idea: The artist uses many straight stitches to create the illusion of a curving shape. Here, Garfinkel and Albrecht created and assigned a curve-stitching project for an algebra unit, and in this they include their handouts, sample student work, and their grading rubric in addition to their reflections on the activity.
