    This article draws from the need for clarification of constitutive elements of research in mathematics education. In particular, we discuss the role of theory in research and the notion of theoretical, practical and conceptual framework adopting the terminology of Eisenhart. Finally we address the issue of the role of a conceptual framework in research and the reference to the need of including the methodological problem of characterizing the framework in an agenda for research in mathematics education.

    Este artigo parte da necessidade de clarificação dos elementos constitutivos da investigação em educação matemática. Em particular, discute-se o papel da teoria na investigação e a noção de framework teórico, prático e conceptual adoptando a terminologia utilizada por Eisenhart. Terminamos com considerações sobre o papel do framework conceptual na investigação e a referência a necessidade de incluir o problema metodológico da caracterização do quadro teórico conceptual numa agenda de investigação em educação matemática.
