The aim of this essay is to analyze the contributions of Anthony Giddens’s Structuration Theory as a theoretical tool for understanding the mediating role of teachers’ beliefs in English Language Teaching (ELT) within the context of the Nueva Escuela Mexicana (NEM). From this perspective, it is argued that teacher beliefs function as a mechanism of constitutive mediation; that is, as interpretive schemes that enable teacher agency in the face of institutional structures. This theoretical framework aims to analyze how the curricular transition from an approach based on standardized competencies toward a more critical and situated pedagogy demands a reconfiguration of teacher beliefs. This essay posits that beliefs act as a dialectical axis where English teachers negotiate the tension between historical linguistic hegemony and the humanistic, situated vision of the NEM. The study concludes that understanding this mediation is essential to advancing toward a pedagogical practice that does not merely respond to curricular guidelines, but resignifies them from a sociocultural and professionally autonomous perspective.
