This study aims to analyse the perceptions of a group of biology teachers working in the state school system of Rio Grande do Sul regarding the New Secondary Education (NEM) curriculum, verifying the potential and limiting factors of this curriculum proposal in the construction of biological knowledge and the integral development of students. An exploratory qualitative research was conducted, adopting the following data collection instruments: theoretical review, documentary analysis of the BNCC, and semi-structured interviews. Bardin's Content Analysis was used to evaluate the data. The teachers' perspectives reflect weaknesses in the composition of the NEM curriculum with regard to the construction of biological knowledge, especially in terms of the available workload. The curriculum format shows potential for the integral development of students, as it encourages their autonomy and directs them towards professional training. However, the conduct of the training itineraries proved to be superficial and unstructured.
