The International Community of Teachers of Mathematical Modelling and Applications-ICTMA.
is chapter recognizes the descriptive and prescriptive characteristics of a set of mathematical modeling tasks by identifying the potential actions present in the modeling task statements. is study addresses the need found in the literature to investigate the integration of descriptive and prescriptive mathematical modeling processes that promote students' understanding of phenomena and the transformation of their reality. A content analysis of the statements of a set of tasks extracted from recent publications of e International Community of Teachers of Mathematical Modelling and Applications-ICTMA was carried out. An emergent categorization system was designed to facilitate the recognition of the characteristics of both types of modeling in terms of actions. Each of the potential actions evidenced in the task statements analyzed and how they are the result of the adoption of certain descriptive and prescriptive features of modeling are presented. In the results, we present each of the potential actions evidenced in the task statements analyzed and how they imply the adoption of certain descriptive and prescriptive features of modeling. e chapter ends with some reflections on this categorization in relation to the descriptive and prescriptive character of modeling and its integration in the mathematics classroom. At the end of the chapter, some implications of this study for teaching and research are presented.
