  • Resumen
    • Judit Polgár is a Hungarian international grandmaster, eight-time Open Chess Olympian, two-time Women's Olympic Chess Champion, the greatest female chess player in the history of chess, ranked 8th in the world in absolute rankings. With the help of teachers and experts, she developed an unique teaching method for preschool and school children. In this research, we used her complex skills development programme created for children aged 4–10, which develops and reinforces the ‘4C’ skills: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity, which are essential for a child in the 21st century to develop into a well-balanced, successful grown up in their career and social life. This paper presents an experiment involving fourth grade (10–11 years old) students, in two experimental groups. The study examined the impact of chess training on academic performance in a rural elementary school. The sample of 30 pupils with an intervention group undergoing chess training and a control group. Statistical tests were carried out to examine whether the performance of students has improved after the chess intervention. The results of the paired samples t-test analysis showed significant improvement in academic performances of students after a month of chess training, with t =1.725, p<0.05.
