  • One of the most common, complex and visually appealing elements are fluids. From the complex shapes of the clouds or the hypnotic movement of the fire, to the waves at the surface of the sea or the intricate shapes of a cigarette smoke. All are everyday interactions with fluids, which makes us more sensitive to detecting when they are not behaving as they should.

    In this thesis we will focus on the study of the dynamics of fluids that are produced on the surface of liquids, designing new efficient simulation models that can be used interactively in a production environment, and thus must be robust and efficient.

    Motivated by this, the thesis is divided into two main sections focusing on two very different surface problems. The first part is focused on the dynamics that take place on the surface of water, specifically the modelling of water waves. The goal is to design a simulation model that allows the representation of the main phenomena that appear in wave propagation on the surface of the fluid, such as dispersion, diffraction, reflection and refraction. For this task, we present our error-compensated Dispersion Kernel which, by applying our efficient shadow convolution operations, is capable of representing the interaction of dispersive waves with obstacles at interactive rates.

    The second part of the thesis focuses on dendritic painting, a painting technique that has become increasingly popular in recent years thanks to social networks, based on the creation of dendritic patterns by mixing acrylic paint with alcohol, as a result of a complex interaction between multiphase fluids. We present the first dendritic painting simulation model that combines fluid dynamics with Reaction-Diffusion models, allowing the representation of this complex phenomenon in an efficient way.
