An effective computation of a basis of the nontrivial centralizer of a differential operator is the first step towards a Picard-Vessiot theory for spectral problems. A method is presented to calculate the centralizer of an order three ordinary differential operator, applying G. Wilson’s results on almost-commuting operators.
