The aim of this study is to identify characteristics of the gifted students in mathematics in two students in the 3rd grade of Primary School (9 years old) with high abilities when reasoning with the attributes of polygons when solving geometric tasks. The participants were involved in a teaching experiment designed to promote understanding of the polygon concept and polygons classes. The data collection instrument was tasks about recognizing and drawing polygons with given attributes and identifying the common attribute in a set of polygons. The analysis consisted of identifying characteristics of the gifted students in mathematics described by Greenes (1981) in the student's answers. The results exemplify some of these characteristics in our students. The student 1 showed: originality of interpretation, ability to transfer ideas, and ability to generalize; and the student 2 showed: data organization ability, originality of interpretation, ability to generalize, and flexibility in handling data. These characteristics show the need to use tasks with different degrees of complexity that allow students to develop originality, flexibility, and creativity in their geometric reasoning.
