The rules about leap years in the Gregorian calendar are rooted in a simple problem in elementary mathematics; surprisingly, the conventional rules are not intrinsically optimal. This problem can be of interest in different stages of mathematical education and illustrates a sometimes neglected point about curriculum and pedagogy: one must think about progression in terms of not only content but also sophistication of use.
