Resumen de Teaching and learning of mathematics at university level

  • In my contribution to the plenary panel of the Spanish Society for Research in MathematicsEducation Symposium, I draw on recent research to discuss issues related to UniversityMathematics Education (UME). I start with a discussion on what makes UME special. Then, Ioutline recent research programmes and the perspective they bring in UME research. Finally, Idiscuss a range of teaching and learning issues related to UME with attention to the transitionbetween school and university mathematics. Overall, my position is that UME is a distinctive areaof research in terms of content and practices; the students and their aspirations; and, the teachers,their engagement with research and their expectations from the students. Research enquiry in UMEis better situated to the context of the institutions, communities, and practices under considerationinstead of a discussion about teaching and learning in abstract.
