Resumen de ¿Qué aleja a las niñas de la ciencia y la tecnología?: Entendiendo los motivos y buscando soluciones

El objetivo de este trabajo es dar algunos datos para reflexionar sobre la siguiente pregunta: «¿Qué aleja a las niñas de la ciencia y la tecnología?». Hablaremos fundamentalmente de aquellos estereotipos que llevan a muchas jóvenes a pensar que no serán capaces de prosperar en ámbitos STEM (ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas, por sus siglas en inglés). La falta de referentes femeninos en ciencia y tecnología reafirma decisivamente estos sesgos, muchas veces inconscientes, que de manera sutil van trazando caminos académicos y laborales diferentes a chicas y chicos. Ser conscientes de qué errores cometemos –como sociedad y de manera individual– puede ayudar a corregir una injusticia que dura demasiado tiempo: la de frenar a muchas mujeres en sus posibles aspiraciones en disciplinas STEM.

The objective of this work is to give some information to reflect on the following question: "What keeps girls away from science and technology?". We will mainly talk about those stereotypes that lead many young women to think that they will not be able to prosper in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics, for its acronym in English). The lack of female role models in science and technology decisively reaffirms these biases, often unconscious, that in a subtle way are tracing different academic and work paths for girls and boys. Being aware of what mistakes we make – as a society and individually – can help to correct an injustice that lasts too long: that of holding many women back from their possible aspirations in STEM disciplines.
