  En el siguiente artículo encontrará un acercamiento, desde la perspectiva del papel de los ingenieros industriales, de uno de los personajes que marcó un hito en la historia de la Primera Revolución Industrial: Thomas Cook. Para ello se tomó como referente la lectura del libro: “La liga de los capitalistas salvajes” de Benoist Simmat & Vincent Caut [1], donde se hace un apartado específico acerca de Cook, el cual ayudará a ver qué características son análogas a las competencias básicas que debe tener un ingeniero industrial.Se debe recalcar que se es ingeniero por crear desde cero o corregir procesos, cuando se optimizan y se aprovechan los recursos, cuando por conceptos de reingeniería se redefine la innovación, cuando se estima cada pilar del proceso y no solo se ve la trazabilidad desde la administración Con ello, se quiere advertir como estas características aparecen en Cook, A su vez, es momento de pensar de nuevo en la concepción que tenemos del quehacer de la ingeniería y volver la mirada atrás, y rescatar, utilizando la imagen usada por los autores del libro, la metafórica idea de ser lunático, debido a las reuniones ingeniosas de los ilustrados a pensar bajo la luz de la luna, romántico pero audaz, porque si un ingeniero no se detiene a pensar nunca encontrará destellos de creatividad.La creatividad, según Gagné (s.f.) “La creatividad puede ser considerada una forma de solucionar problemas, mediante intuiciones o una combinación de ideas de campos muy diferentes de conocimientos” [2]. Es así como vemos como la sinergia entre los campos es lo que hace posible la creatividad y, en particular, para la ingeniería es la que nos permitirá la posibilidad de Re-ingeniar.
