Hacia 1122 el Papa Calixto II concede a la catedral de Santiago de Compostela el privilegio de ganar el Jubileo en aquellos años en los que el 25 de julio, fiesta del Apóstol Santiago, coincide con domingo. Estos años son conocidos como Años Santos Jacobeos, siendo 2010 el último de ellos.
Nos podemos preguntar si el año 2019 será o no de este tipo, o cuáles serán los siguientes en el siglo xxi. Puede ser interesante también, conocer el día de la semana de mi nacimiento, el día de la semana del Año Nuevo 6 o para un historiador el poder comprobar si el 13 de abril de 1664 fue domingo de Pascua.
Hoy día, existen múltiples aplicaciones en internet y en dispositivos móviles que dan respuesta a estas preguntas. Estas aplicaciones están basadas en un cálculo, relativamente simple, que convierte una fecha dada en la forma día, mes y año en un entero entre el 0 y el 6, representando los siete días de la semana. La fórmula se conoce como Congruencia de Zeller.
