• Using a modification of Wilkie's recent proof of o-minimality for Pfaffian functions, we give an invariant characterization of o-minimal expansions of $\Bbb R$. We apply this to construct the Pfaffian closure of an arbitrary o-minimal expansion of $\Bbb R$.
