The area of game theoretic models of cost allocation problems is a very large one and the authors have made the, in my eyes wise, choice to highlight a few areas of application. The paper provides an excellent overview of applications of game theory to the areas of transportation, natural resources, and the power industry, and it includes a wealth of references. Rather than trying to add to this overview or discussing other areas of application, I address the more general issues of why one might want to use cooperative games to study cost allocation problems and what we can learn from using cooperative games in such problems.
