If we define a (complex) system as any situation or structure consisting of a number of elements which interact with each other in order to achieve one or more objectives, then many real-world problems can be considered under the umbrella of this definition. The elements of a system could be individuals, institutions (firms, worker unions, etc.), or objects (genes, electronic components, base stations, etc.) and the interaction could be of a very diverse nature depending on the kind of elements and on the system itself. To analyze a system we can use different approaches depending on the objective of our analysis, for example, given a two-sided market situation if we want to know what overall profit is attainable for that market, then we should use a mathematical programming approach. However, if we want to know how the profit should be distributed among the agents to favor their cooperation, then a game theoretical approach would be better.
