Resumen de Dynamic Mathematical Modeling as a Student Activity

L. Carl Leinbach

  • In this paper we will show how modern computational tools found in CAS and some advanced calculators enable students to construct and analyses dynamic models at an early stage in their careers. In fact, they can do this type of analysis with only a background in Algebra For the most part, although not entirely, the process of solving the differential equation is a black box. The white box portion of the mathematical activity is to set up the model and to analyse the results. Based on their analysis, the students can make decisions that affect the outcome of the results. Thus, students can learn how to use their mathematical training to help them make intelligent decisions in matters related to their real life experiences. We will apply this ability to a real life conflict between ecologists and fishermen whose livelihood is threatened by an ecological disaster.
