In this paper, the numerical approximation of the one-dimensional transport equation by means of finite-difference schemes is discussed. Special attention is paid to the crucial concept of numerical stability, which can be clearly analyzed for this equation. It will be shown, through a series of basic but meaningful examples, how stability affects the quality of the numerical approximations. The procedures here described may serve as basis for the deep understanding of numerical approaches to other more complex physical phenomena.
