This communication describes the general mechanism of connection between local applications running in servers with clients using them by means of the widely-accepted Web standard. The mechanism are known as gateways, and several appoximations can be used for their building, generating different functionalities. Two examples implemented by the authors are described: a gateway to the well known Oracle database and another one to the Arc/Info Geographical Information System. Advantages of the Web graphical interface are shown, both, generally and applied to these cases. It is specially important the possibility of obtaining a client-server architecture on those databases not provided natively with this possibility. In a similar way, by use of the Web application Image-Map geo-referenced information can be got through mouse input, which is specially important for geographic databases.
