The aim of this paper is to offer a brief account of some interesting attitudes toward mathematics, mathematical discourse, numerology and akin matters, by one of the foremost early fathers of Christianity. The authority of St. Augustine as one of the chief grounders of Christian dogma ensures wide acceptance to his views on numbers and mathematics throughout the Middle Ages and therefore conveys an outstanding starting point to a better understanding of medieval mathematics.
