• This issue of Teaching Mathematics and its Applications contains six papers presented to the Fifth IMA Conference on the Mathematical Education of Engineers, held at Loughborough University during April 2006. Three of the papers are concerned with the prior knowledge of mechanics in new engineering undergraduates, two papers deal with the problem of the diverse mathematical backgrounds of students and the final paper compares mathematics teaching in the UK, Sweden and New Zealand.
