The supremacy of a few teams over the other participants is a common factor in the major European football leagues. The Spanish first division league (la Primera División) is not an exception. In order to demonstrate this fact, functional data analysis (fda) is used to analyze football league classifications. In doing so, two types of simulations have been performed, a uniform and a weighted simulation. This second simulation is the main contribution of this work, since it provides a probability distribution of the three possible outcomes of a match. To verify the usefulness of this approach, an empirical application is carried out using the results of 3040 matches examined during the last eight seasons (2002-03 to 2009-10) distinguishing differences in category between teams. For all the years examined, the results demonstrate the existence of a significant imbalance in the Spanish league, accentuated in recent seasons for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
