La homofilia/heterofilia en el marco de la teoría y análisis de redes sociales.: Orientación metodológica, medición y aplicaciones

    La homofilia social se refiere al hecho por el que las personas tienen tendencia a relacionarse más con quienes tienen características sociales similares más allá de lo esperado en condiciones de aleatoriedad. Para la sociología es un fenómeno de interés particular. La homofilia está en la base de la reproducción social (o del cambio social), de los procesos de socialización y de los grupos de pertenencia y referencia. El estudio de la homofilia ha experimentado un salto importante con la teoría y análisis de redes sociales (TARS), en particular a partir de las décadas de 1970 y 80. En el artículo se hace un repaso de las diferentes aproximaciones a la homofilia y se presenta una operativización reticular de dicho concepto. Se desarrolla también una aplicación sobre colectivos identificados en base a tres variables. De este modo se abordan tanto aspectos metodológicos, como los vinculados a las técnicas de análisis y los indicadores.

    Social homophily describes the tendency to have social relationships with people who are socially similar, over and above the expected by randomness. This represents a matter of great interest for sociology. Homophily is at the heart of social reproduction (or of social change), of socialization processes and of membership in reference groups. The study of homophily has experienced a significant leap since it became a subject of study under social network analysis (and theory), particularly since the decades of 1970 and 1980. The article gives an overview of different approaches to homophily and presents a network operativization of this concept. An application of this operativization on social groups identified by three variables is presented too. Thus, the article addresses methodological aspects, and issues linked to analysis methods and indicators.
