The paper presents an innovative description ofverb valency in an electronic learner's dictionary for the German and Italian languages (ELDIT). It fully exploits the various possibilities of multimedia and hypertext technology and aims at a learner-friendly description of a very complex linguistic research field, namely verb valency, to a very specific target group. This means that, among other things, hyperlinks, colours and movable images are used for the visualization of information, that linguistic information is explained in a simple and comprehensible way without complicated technical terminology and cryptic abbreviations, and that scientific insights are translated into a language which is adequate to the learners.
