En este artículo se expone una panorámica de la exploración de Marte como pieza crucial para entender, por un lado, el origen y formación del Sistema Solar, y, por otro lado, el propio entorno terrestre. Asimismo se discute la posible existencia de vida en el planeta rojo y se analizan algunas misiones futuras en las que España va a participar.

In this article a general view of the exploration of Mars is exposed as a crucial part of better understanding, on one hand, the origin and formation of the Solar system and, on the other hand, the terrestrial environment. Th e possible existence of life on the red planet together with a number of future missions, where Spain is foreseen to participate, are analyzed.
