In this paper we are interested in estimating totals of unemployed and employed people (men, women and both) as well as rates of unemployment in Canary Islands small areas. Two area level models are fitted to Spanish Labour Force Survey data in order to derive the corresponding small area estimates. To estimate mean squared errors two procedures are considered. First one is based on explicit formulas and the other one is based on a jackknife method. Comparisons on the estimation methods and on the calculations of mean squared errors are given.
