Whilst data on the circle are seldom symmetrically distributed, most of the statistical theory for the analysis of circular data has been developed for symmetrical models, with particular importance being given to the von Mises distribution. Various skew distributions have been proposed in the literature, but these models have rarely been applied in practice.
We consider the wrapped version of the skew-normal distribution of Azzalini (1985) as a model for circular data. Basic results for the distribution are given and estimation for a circular parametrisation of it is outlined.
