Las organizaciones sanitarias están adoptando nuevas técnicas de gestión que le permitan optimizar el rendimiento de su actividad de aprovisionamiento, y así incurrir en menores costes y ser más eficientes. Este trabajo analiza el efecto del uso de los sistemas de información interorganizacionales (IOS) como herramienta que facilitará la toma de decisiones en la compra de productos sanitarios aumentando la eficiencia de la cadena de aprovisionamiento. A través del análisis de la información relativa a transacciones comerciales de productos hospitalarios entre un sistema sanitario y sus proveedores, este trabajo demuestra que la implantación de sistemas de información interorganizacionales (IOS), favorece el incremento del número de proveedores y con ello de la competencia, repercutiendo en la obtención de menores precios de compra.
