It is shown that both a model of traffic flow with driver reaction and discontinuous road surface and a model of continuous sedimentation of flocculated suspensions give rise to strongly degenerate parabolic problems with discontinuous coefficients. For one of these models, an existence and uniqueness theory is outlined, which includes the convergence proof for a simple difference scheme. This scheme is used to produce numerical simulations of both applications.
