Given three distinct non-collinear points in the Euclidean plane, we study the locally Lipschitz planar vector field associated with the gradient of the sum of the distances to these points. We characterize its equilibrium points in terms of the geometry of the triangle generated by the vertices. In particular, when all interior angles are smaller than 120◦, there exists a unique equilibrium point that coincides with the classical Fermat point of the triangle. We investigate the qualitative properties of the associated gradient flow, proving the existence of a Lyapunov structure and describing the global dynamics of the system. The singular behavior at the vertices is analyzed through a polar blow-up, revealing a saddle-node transition in the local dynamics when the critical angle 120◦ is crossed. We also study the orthogonal dynamics associated with the distance-induced vector field, obtaining a complementary Hamiltonian-type structure tangent to the level sets of the distance function. Near the vertices, the blowup of the orthogonal dynamics exhibits corner-like configurations. These level sets correspond to generalized multifocal ellipses, relating the dynamics to the classical geometry of multifocal conics.
