Since 2018, extreme violence in Ecuador has increased significantly. One variable that reflects this critical situation is the rise in the intentional homicide rate. This fact confirms Ecuador's position as one of the most violent countries in Latin America, the most violent region in the world. According to police records, several variables influence the occurrence of homicides. On the one hand, the type of weapon used to commit an intentional homicide plays a fundamental role in the corresponding judicial process. On the other hand, explanatory variables related to this crime, such as its type, location, day and time of occurrence, province, gender, and age of the victim, are considered in order to estimate the probability of using a specific type of weapon to commit an intentional homicide. To estimate this probability, we developed and estimated a multinomial logistic model, which is part of the generalized linear model. The results help authorities in charge of citizen security develop optimal strategies to prevent, respond to, and investigate this type of crime.
