This is a phenomenographic study conducted by interviewing 14 academics in mathematics and statistics with the aim of categorising the different conceptions of mathematical communication held by academics. We find that conceptions broadly split into two themes: Qualities of the mathematical communication and Processes involved in composing a piece of mathematical communication. These themes each consisted of three categories. The Qualities theme broke up into categories: Formal, Pictures and Language. The Processes theme consisted of the categories: Audience, Medium and Identity. We conclude that academics in mathematics and statistics have well-formed and nuanced conceptions of mathematical communication, and our study provides the means for identifying or organising high-quality mathematical communication in the context of education. We also discuss some ideas on how our results can contribute to task design for developing mathematical communication.
