In recent years, society has witnessed significant advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence, enabling its integration as an everyday technology. Despite being a scientific discipline often associated with the future, this work provides a historical review of the field to better understand its potential evolution. To this end, keyscientists such as Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, and John McCarthy, as well as major events in its development, are highlighted. Next, the main algorithms and techniques that enable this technology in the processing and analysis of written texts aredescribed, with a particular focus on the challenges posed by handling this type of data. In this regard, the functioning of algorithms such as Artificial Neural Networks,Recurrent Neural Networks, the attention mechanism, and Transformers is explained. Finally, Large Language Models are introduced, and the main research directions that Artificial Intelligence proposes for the future, along with their estimated time horizon, are summarized.
