This doctoral thesis focuses on mathematical learning in children with autism from two approaches: arithmetic word problem solving and functional thinking. From the first approach, the early mathematical competence and the informal problem-solving strategies are described, establishing relationships with cognitive characteristics of autism, and the effectiveness of a modified schema-based methodology for teaching additive problem solving is assessed. From the functional thinking approach, the strategies shown by students with autism when solving tasks involving linear functions are described and the effectiveness of a methodology based on multiple representations to promote their algebraic thinking is presented. This thesis expands the literature on mathematical learning in children with autism, a topic of growing interest in the field of mathematics education research with important implications for the educational inclusion of this group.
