Resumen de Data modeling using finite differences

Kathryn Rhoads, James A. Mendoza Alvarez

  • The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics states that high school students should be able to recognize patterns of growth in linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and construct such functions from tables of data. Here, Rhoads and Alvarez address two points that are commonly overlooked: an nth-degree polynomial is not the only type of function that can model data with constant nth differences over equal-size intervals and an nth-degree polynomials is, however, the only type of function with domain that has constant nth differences over equal-size intervals without restricting interval size or input values.
